Dr. Ben Carson is known and admired by many East St. Louisans. Dr. Carson is presently vying for the presidency of the United States.
We have met him and thank him because the Dr. Benjamin Carson Scholars Fund in conjunction with the St. Louis University School of Medicine Office of Cultural Affairs awarded a $10,000 grant to the East St. Louis School District 189 Dr. Katie Harper Wright Elementary School to establish a Ben Carson Reading Room, that made its debut Jan. 22, 2007. The grant made it possible to purchase books, library supplies, furnishings and student incentives. (My doctorate in education was earned at St. Louis University.) Dr. Ben Carson is a world-renowned neurosurgeon/philanthropist. He states that reading opens avenues to success for young people.
Ben Carson is a man of faith. In fact one of my own favorite books is, “Think Big,” an autobiographical book in which he writes about his relationship with God. I hope and believe that Dr. Ben Carson will continue to use his relationship with God to help enhance the quality of life for all of us, whether we are Christian, Jewish, Muslim or of other persuasion. We are all human beings.
