I applaud East St. Louis Mayor Emeka Jackson-Hicks for stepping into office and immediately assessing the flaws in the previous administration, and beginning the process of implementing corrective measures to address the same. Unfortunately, her efforts were usurped by the city council almost as quickly as they were implemented.
The council was able to do this because Mayor Jackson-Hicks did not have enough votes on the council in her favor to thwart this effort. Well, we as voters in our great city have to realize that when we vote for our mayor, it behooves us to also vote for the people running on his or her ticket. In this way, if and when our choice of mayor is elected, he or she can walk into office with a majority of the council votes and will be able to move his or her agenda forward with a majority of the council vote, and this type of thing would never happen. Food for thought.
