I’ve read most of the editorials and articles the News-Democrat has printed about East St. Louis School District 189 and French Village and have read only two credible statements. I do believe the women’s rental property will have a higher marketability if her property in French Village became part of the Grant/Belleville 201 School District and I know District 189 has a high property tax rate. French Village also has lower assessed values for their homes because of District 189. If they leave our school district French Village’s tax rate will go down, but their assessed value will go up. Has anyone in French Village talked to the county to see what their possible tax bills could be if they join the Grant/201 School District?
What I don’t believe is the statement that School District 189 isn’t giving our children a decent education. I’ve taught 20 years at the secondary level in School District 189 and I have had the joy of seeing our students go on to become doctors, lawyers, dentists, engineers, war fighters, firemen, policemen, accountants, programmers, teachers and tradesmen. A District 189 education has set the foundation for our children to complete degrees at EIU, SIUE, Carbondale, U of I, Mizzou, Duke and Notre Dame. Our children have gone on to compete in the Super Bowl, World Series and the Olympics. School District 189 has given its children a proper education and start in life.
