After reading a recent Sound-Off, I thought I would respond to some of the comments. One comment said, “Why are these old guys griping?” If you paid into a plan, be it mutual fund, pension, etc., you would gripe also if you lost half of it.
My husband retired after 38 years of contributions that took most of his raises for the pension fund. He also paid into Social Security. He is losing half of his monthly pension benefit. It seems that the people who paid in the most are also losing the most.
As far as political affiliations, we have no loyalty to one party over another. To the third person who lumped Teamster pensions in with the teachers’ pensions, you make it sound like Teamsters didn’t contribute to their pensions. Contributions were up to $100 per week at the time of his retirement, plus he paid into Social Security.
Save for a rainy day. We thought we did.
