Our readers react to the week’s news:
Check the history of heroin users
I’m calling about the articles on heroin addictions, deaths and how they start with prescription medications. If politicians are going to write stories about people starting out on prescription drugs and then jumping to heroin, I contradict the articles’ content, only two were not heroin. I would ask politicians, when you catch someone who is abusing heroin, go back through their history to see when and how much of the pain pills they were prescribed in the past that pushed them to heroin. Innocent people who reply on medications are getting a bad name. What the paper is saying is not true.
Costello needs to tell us his plan
I read in the paper about Costello. Mr. Costello talks in circles about Rauner and the State of the State speech. Why don’t you come forth with your plan for resolving the stale mate between the governor and the legislature? I’d like to hear something that doesn’t point to you improving your image with your voters. Let’s hear your solution to the problems of this state. I’m tired of no results from your position and your old man. Quit.
Why not widen North Illinois Street
Questioning what is the construction on North Illinois Street in Belleville, lots of tearing up and money spending. Why didn’t they take the time to widen the road because of the traffic congestion? Just curbs and sidewalks? That’s it?
Out of work? Remember NAFTA
To all you people who are down and out looking for work, because there are no manufacturers around our area. Just remember NAFTA, North America Free Trade America. Initiated by Democrat Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary. All the car supporting jobs and little extras for the car industry, where are they? The jobs are in Mexico. Thanks to your Democrats and NAFTA.
That’s not the president’s job
I’m calling about Col. Fitz’s letter, where he justifies President Obama’s executive action because he said, “most Americans wanted it.” Depends which poll you follow. We need immigration reform and gun control. Isn’t that why we have the Senate and the House of Representatives? We elect Congress to enact laws. If the people want it, they vote for the Congressmen to do it for them, not the president. Col. Fitz needs to go back to ROC training and learn what the Constitution says. It’s not the president’s job to make laws.
The Republican presidental candidates are a laughing stock. You have a bully, a snake oil salesman from Texas. Neither one has a plan. What are you going to do? That’s what you have.
Straighten out the mess
The Democrats passed an education bill. You have the state in such a mess. We have to funnel out $400 million for low income students. If we have this many low income students, this state is in one hell of a mess. Mr. Costello, how do you intend to straighten out this mess?
More about roadblocks
The Answer Man’s article on roadblocks just proves to me in the name of freedom, we are not out to combat crime. Wording in the Fourth Amendment says we are aiding crime. As far as roadblocks go, police could set up roadblocks right outside bars and catch nine out of 10 drunk drivers. To let a drunk person walk out of a bar, get in a car and go down the road to kill someone is not freedom in my book. I’m sure the people who wrote the Fourth Amendment had no idea what the future would hold with drunk and doped up drivers driving high speed killing machines down the highway.
A school district is not a business
How is a school district a business to quality for an award from the Chamber of Commerce? A school district should not make a profit, how are they classified as a business? I could see them getting an award as a partner and listed, but not as a business.
What is the greatest invention in 40 years? The TV remote. I forward him, or mute the president. It is so enjoyable to have this power.
Apply the law in Cahokia
I’m reading in the paper where Cahokia agencies violated the Open Meeting Act, confirmed by Illinois Asstant Attorney General Edie Steinberg. What is he going to do with the people down in Cahokia? If they violated a law shouldn’t they be fined or put in jail? Apply the law.
MidAmerica isn’t struggling
How dare you call MidAmerica struggling? Didn’t I read where the director got a big bonus for increasing business? So how can it be struggling?
Wake up, America
Wake up, America, for eight years we have had low inflation, unemployment dropped below 5 percent, millions of Americans have health insurance who have never had it before. And very few American soldiers have died in the Middle East. Why would anyone want to elect a Republican to the White House and bring back the misery of the Bush administration?
A cartoon suggestion
I suggest a cartoon for Glen McCoy. The picture is Hillary and Bill holding hands in front of the White House. Above the White House, it says “Their first visit after her victory.” Hillary says, “What do I do now”? Bill says, “Oh boy another opportunity”.
Clean up the trash
St. Paul’s Home in Belleville recently rebuilt a very nice apartment building and cleaned up the area in the facility. Very nice. But there are houses right next door that are run down, trash cans over flowing, waste and trash in the yards. Why isn’t the city getting on these people? Why would anyone want to put their loved ones in a nice home and come visit and look at the trash in the neighborhood?
Find a use for hospital building
Since St. Elizabeth’s is leaving Belleville, it would be really nice if we could see the city and the hospital administrators and get together with a group of investors that may want to purchase the hospital and keep it going. It’s a nice building that could really do some good for this area.
Not another white elephant
The Belleville City Council approves the sewer project at the Feb. 1 City Council meeting for the shrine project, but there is still no name for the hotel. Do the taxpayers not care or is this going to be another big white elephant like the one in Mascoutah? Please speak up!
Get back to family values
I read in the paper that the Belleville public school parade and picnic were canceled. It has been going on for a very long time. As a parent and child it was the highlight of the spring season. IT was a big deal, a family event. As it evolved, parents became less interested because other priorities took precedence. I think people should get back to family values, getting back to being with their children, teaching their kids the rights from wrongs and everyone would have a better way of life.
