Reading your recent article, “Businesses get tough” I was struck by the odd comment that a group of Illinois Revenue Department workers could be evicted from their home in New Jersey. This comment brought up some questions and a little research revealed that, yes we do have a tax office in New Jersey, located at 45 Eisenhower Drive, #220, Paramus, NJ 07652. Office space at that location by the way costs $25 a square foot to rent, over twice our local rates. According to the article, the home some of them live in costs the state taxpayers almost $7,600 a month or over $91,000 a year.
If I were an enterprising young reporter I would ask, why do we have Illinois tax people in New Jersey? What is the total cost per year to operate there? Do they recoup the state more than that cost? Do we have tax offices in other states and why? How many state employees live in the house? What is the address and what does the house look like? I did a search of homes for rent in Paramus, NJ. Oh my. Google 834 Johnston Drive, Watchung, NJ 07069. This is what $7,000 a month in Jersey will get you. As the song says, Jed become a state employee and move away from there. Said New Jersey is the place you oughta be ... swimming pools, movie stars and Jacuzzi’s. No wonder we are broke.
