U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry keeps calling the Islamic State “apostates.” It’s something he should not have done and should stop immediately.
I can’t imagine anything more upsetting for Muslims in general than for a Christian and a representative of a secular nation to make such a call about some who call themselves Muslim.
Most mainstream Muslim scholars have sopped short of labeling ISIS an apostasy.
The condemnation as “apostate” in the Muslim faith has specific theological and legal consequences. It is not the place of a secular nation to make such a call.
