“It’s alive! It’s alive!” So declared Dr. Frankenstein when the amalgam of stolen body parts he cobbled together arose from the assembly table in his clandestine laboratory. Republican hierarchs view with similar amazement the political ascension of Donald Trump, a monster of their own creation.
Trump’s political ineptness is often on display at rallies and interviews, particularly when he deviates from his rote message. To wit: In his recent interview with MSNBC’s Chris Mathews, Trump managed to reignite America’s simmering abortion issue.
However, the Mathews/Trump interview brought to focus the crux of the abortion issue. Objection to abortion is based almost exclusively on religious teachings. The secular view leaves the abortion decision making (to have or not have) with the individual(s) effected by the pregnancy.
From a legal standpoint, there is no law that requires anyone to have an abortion. When the religious rhetoric is stripped from the abortion controversy, the fact of the matter is clear: no woman is required to have an abortion. So politicians who create laws obstructing or eliminating abortion are in fact imposing their religious beliefs on all Americans. Outlawing abortion is establishing government religion. And the 1st amendment to the U.S. Constitution states in part that there shall be “no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
