The Collinsville Memorial Library is the home of the Mississippi Valley Library District that also includes the Fairmont City Library. A special board meeting was held on March 10 for the purpose of selecting a new director. The current director, Barbara Rhodes has previously said she wants to retire. Her 2015 earnings were about $74,000 plus $20,000 in benefits.
A recent request was made to Rhodes also being the FOI officer for records pertaining to water and sewer bills for both fiscal years ending 2014 and 2015. The following morning the officer sent a copy of bills for calendar years 2014 through December 2015. That certainly was not for fiscal years. On March 14, a requester messaged that seven business days had elapsed and the officer failed to comply.
Now first-graders are learning about computer technology. MVLD is competing with churches and independent daycare centers. Our Unit 10 School District also uses some of our tax dollars to support their own library. The needed value of the library translates to the decreasing value of the library directors. Hopefully, the MVLD board understands they have a buyer’s market when deciding the salary of a new director.
