Our readers react to the week’s news:
Lessie Bates funding
Lessie Bates Homes has had to cut funding to pay for meals for the poor, elderly and indigent. At the same time the Pontiac School District receives a grant to help stop smoking in public parks? Which is a priority, which is more important? Feeding the poor and elderly or having a bunch of kids go out and pick up cigarette butts?
Never miss a local story.
I applaud the concept of the county clearing a space for a dog park by the animal center. My concern is who is doing the work clearing this? Is it paid for by the taxpayers for county employees? We have a lot of people doing community service, through the courts. And people sitting around at the County Jail. Projects have merit, why not take these people out of the jail who are doing community service and put them in the parks? We have lots of parks, put them to work.
Write to Obama
The people in St. Clair County and the surrounding area need to act differently regarding the NGA west construction. Most are just accepting it. Clearly some people are dealing with it by writing and calling and trying to influence the decision. If you don’t you are failing to take responsibility. That is a big mistake. Remember addition to the NGA and Corps of Engineer website, the best way to the president is to write directly to him. There is a place to make a message, somebody will read it, maybe he will. www.whitehouse.gov.
Isn’t it ironic and also scary that the NGA, an organization responsible for mapping the world, cannot tell the difference between counties with the same name, but in different parts of the country? Maybe we don’t need these incompetent dullards on this side of the river.
Just read Pete Hill’s letter about our license renewal notices. He states he was at the License Bureau in Belleville when the employee told him it was Gov. Rauner’s fault that the renewal letters didn’t go out. This employee should have 30 days off without pay. government employees are prohibited from exercising their political viewpoints within the confines and duties of their jobs. This individual who said that needs to be reprimanded and possibly fired.
Need an overhaul
Letters to the editor are complimenting Congressman Bost’s position on helping women out and being responsible to the constituents of our district. In Mr. Enyart’s position, when he was congressman, his staff were of a political nature and had an attitude that was above the constituents. I’m cautioning Mr. Bost, you have staff that have their head in the clouds and over and above the constituents as well. I am going to express my opinion on your staff for being unresponsive to the public. Your staff needs an overhaul.
Democrats don’t care
For the voters who haven’t made up their mind to vote Republican to keep Sen. Kirk or Democratic contender, Duckworth. Just remember, you lost the NGA site, because of Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in Congress could not get the job done and the Obama administration cowers to the city of St. Louis’ needs to try and address the Northside community. That’s what the Democrats want, they don’t care about security. You voters need to make up your mind what the Democratic machines have done. It’s time to get these people out of office. Keep Kirk in office.
Spending city money
I find it humorous that Patty Gregory is giddy that Ameren is giving her $1,500 for an award for Art on the Square. I guess Patty forgets that all the advertising, and donation stuff Ameren does is money they are spending and creating reasons to keep increasing our utility rates. Why are we spending city money giving her money every year for Art on the Square advertising to other media for things in the city? Let the Chamber of Commerce do that stuff. If we are so hurting, it’s time to tighten our belts.
When private businesses experience a financial decline they freeze and cut employee’s salary in order to survive. Why can’t Illinois schools and cities, do the same? Every day it seems the taxpayers work more and more for public workers to keep up their lifestyles while ours go down to finance it. Have we forgotten that public employees work for the taxpayer and not the other way around? Maybe if all citizens leave the state, economic reality will set in.
Reality sets in
Briefly, after the NGA decision, I held hope Steve Harvey announced the winner. When reality set in, I focused on how St. Clair County could learn from this experience. Our cornfields are best for agriculture, suburban sprawl is passé. Attract millennials with the hip, urban vibe in Belleville. Let the magnet be the repurposed, St. Elizabeth’s complex. Dream big, we are in a new era. Feel the burn in Belleville, we are hot.
I am sick to death of this bathroom situation in schools. It has barely started here, but LGBT wants to legitimize their perversion by making everyone else just like them. All I have to say is that I would never let my child go to a school that would allow the opposite sex into a locker room or restroom with my child. Parents who let their child make this decision, to change gender and the parents pay for it, are nuts. What are you going to do when the child grows up and decides it was a mistake? At least North Carolina and Mississippi people still have some sense.
For all the Cardinal bashers and Cub traitors: Cubs haven’t done anything yet. They are still the goat heads. The last eight years they have laid down trying to get all the first-round draft picks. Surely nobody could be that bad. It’s still a long season.
I’d been sitting with some teacher friends. One said, “I have 23 kids in my class and I think I should get $10.hr per student to teach.” Why don’t we test the kids at the end of the day? Because the ratings are so bad in the country and so bad in the state of Illinois. You’d be surprised how many kids cannot pass anything and cannot read. And these teachers want more? Give it to them, see if they can get those grades up and get those kids to read. Believe you me, they wouldn’t be getting their money for the day.
Peas in a pod
Why is the social media so wrapped up around Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, becoming president? I wouldn’t vote for Ryan to be dog catcher. I ask Ryan’s buddy, Romney with a factory in China, “How is that going?” Romney and Ryan are two peas in a pod as far as their attitude about lower income Americans.
I see on the news where Peabody Coal is closing. My husband worked there many years ago. For all you Democrats, and for all you Hillary supporters, she wants to close the coal mines. Do you realize how many people that will affect? How many people are going to be laid off, on unemployment? They go on about job security and having jobs in the US and then she wants to do this? This is thousands of people. Think how many will be out of work because they are filing bankruptcy. And you all know, once you file bankruptcy it is just about over with. Think before you vote.
