Our readers react to the week’s events:
A bad idea
Sen. Heather Steans, D-Chicago, is proposing House Bill 3279 that will increase Illinois gas tax by 30 cents a gallon, the highest in the country if approved. In it is also a hike in license plate renewal to $150. This is a really BAD idea. Please contact her and your local senator and let them know that.
Quit giving tax dollars away
The state is broke, so quit giving our tax dollars in the form of TIF to private businesses to succeed. Get rid of TIF and those who have received it make sure they are using it for the purpose they received it.
Thugs don’t obey laws
If and when the individuals are charged with shooting up the apartment complex near Our Lady Queen of Peace School are found they need to have their FOID cards taken back and their guns taken back. Oh wait, these thugs don’t abide by the rules, they don’t have ID cards or registered guns. Oh my, now what?
The newspaper article about MidAmerica terminal landing a $835,000 upgrade, stating that the federal government is picking up 90 percent of it, leaving $83,500 to be paid for by the county, disguises the full cost. There is the other $60,000 that somebody has to pay which commission said it was going to pay for the engineering services. The $830,500 to be covered by the county is now costing $143,500.
Wait until November
I do believe anyone with half of an honest bone in their body will admit the last two elections the vote was based on race, because of the candidate we ended up putting in the White House, were left with the worst president in the history of the United States. Now we are about to cast a vote based on gender, and possibly put the most crooked person ever known in the United States in the White House simply because she’s a woman. So my question to the readers: if we knew the devil was a woman and running for office, would we vote for the devil? I guess we’ll find out in November.
No wonder the paper had to do a “Setting it straight” on the Fairview Heights City Council proposal for a TIF along Ludwig drive. This is the fourth time that a TIF has been proposed in this area. The first time, it included property and residents, and an 80-plus-year-old widow. The second time, it inadvertently included property along 159 that had been used as agricultural purposes and thus was not eligible for TIF. The third time it included railroad right-of-way property. And now the fourth time one can only hope they got it right. Each and every time the highly compensated consultant got paid. Shame on Fairview Heights.
Guns vs. drugs
All we hear about is Hillary and Bernie and all the liberals are trying to get where a person can sue a manufacturer of guns and even the dealer who sells the guns because they are the cause of all the deaths. At the same time, Obama is releasing heroin dealers every day. Because that is a non-violent crime. It kills more people than guns do. Guns don’t kill people, other people do and a lot of them are on drugs when they do it.
Lincoln said it
A tug of war is raging between two groups of people. One group wants the statues of Confederate generals Robert E Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate president Jefferson Davis removed from the city of New Orleans. The other group want them to stay where they are. We need to remember history so we don’t repeat it. Abraham Lincoln said it best, “We cannot escape history.”
A bad location
Illinois and St. Clair County is the worst place to put anything, including a multimillion dollar facility. The BND knows that. From a state on the brink of bankruptcy, can’t fund the schools, judges dying of overdoses, judges going to jail, cocaine judges trying to beat the system. Look at the MidAmerica Airport white elephant and the low use of that airport and the money it is costing the taxpayers. Just read your paper, and you will know why the NGA isn’t going to put anything in Illinois. We are lucky to have Scott Air Force Base.
Politics and NGA
It’s obvious that the NGA was not looking for security or a good area. The St. Clair County area is the best, I don’t know where our senators and representatives are on this — they let us down. Some kind of politics is going on, because Scott Air Force Base is indeed the best area.
Serving the voters
Seems to me far too many of our politicians, whether at the federal, state of local level, have forgotten that all politics is local. When I place a call to your office and I don’t get a response, when I am promised a response and don’t get a call back, and send an email that isn’t even acknowledged. Your staff positions and pay depend on you, your position, and your pay, depends on me, the voter.
A recent letter to the editor talks about an ethics course for government officials that Brendan Kelly is running. I challenge him to publish the list to the attendees who have completed the course. I also would ask him to tell us where he has received his ethics education to qualify him to give the course. I say that because he is run and controlled by the County Democratic Central Committee. I doubt he can perform his ethical duties without question. Look at voter fraud and other issues that continue to plague this county. All talk and no action.
More than a flaw
Former Sen. Tom DeLay, of Texas, refers to Dennis Hastert as having flaws. Not sure what planet Mr. DeLay lives on, but in my world allegations and payoffs for allegedly sexually abusing five underage children is far more than a flaw. Any judge who lets Dennis Hastert off with less than a full sentience is as bad as Mr. Hastert himself. Think of the problems his alleged action brought into the lives of children who could not protect themselves. He should serve time, he did the crime.
Since the peer mentors in Belleville’s District 118 Autism Program are acting like teacher’s aides and assisting with the students with autism, shouldn’t they be paid as teacher’s aides rather than be used as free labor?
Stopped from singing
Recently a middle school choir went to visit the 9/11 Memorial and asked permission to sing the National Anthem, a guard said yes, but with 50 seconds to go, a guard said they had to stop singing because they needed a permit. Supposedly they called it a public demonstration. I want to know if all those Black Lives Matter people had permits to shut down major highways and put people’s lives in danger. What is happening to the United States of America? Would they have stopped a Muslim group from singing?
Tables are turned
How does it feel St. Clair politicians? You have been screwing all of us with no approval and you used politics to bury us because of politics. How does it feel now that the NGA are doing it to you? Now that the tables are turned, you deserve every bit of it. You Democrat politicians are the reason the NGA is not coming.
