In kudos and condemnation, I am sending this letter to the St. Clair County Republican Party. Kudos for censuring Bob Romanik as a candidate for State Representative. Whether it was moral, ethical, or just smart politics, censuring Bob Romanik was the right thing to do. Censuring Bob Romanik only lends all Republican candidates more credibility in this letter writer’s eyes.
If you or anyone wants to change things for the better, learn about the Illinois Open Meetings Act and the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. I was effective, through FOIA, in stopping the practice of undisclosed legal settlements in St. Clair County. A friend of mine, Guy Don Carlos, used the Illinois Open Meetings Act to ensure that all citizens could voice their concerns at all county board meetings.
Bob Romanik might hide behind a microphone and tell half-truths, make threats, insult elected officials, and humiliate others, but mere rhetoric will never approach having the same impact as a well-written and researched request for public information. Nothing forces public officials into the light of day like compliance to the Illinois Open Meetings Act.
True, there are a few local political warlords who need to go. If you want them gone, learn the rules and follow them to the letter. Show up at public meetings and ask questions. Don’t let a vulgar, convicted liar be your messenger. Again, kudos to the Republican Party for removing a truly bad apple. And yes, I told you so.
