While Gov. Rauner’s goals and desires for a balanced budget is certainly a worthwhile plan; he was a fool to try to implement immediately in his first, and perhaps only, term. The only action of comparable ignorance would be General Cluster at the Little Big Horn. Unfortunately, I have lived to see this kind of mistake happen over and over again.
Gov. Rauner. and his money handlers in Chicago, have to be as dumb as a post to think this could happen. Its like trying to make a U-Turn on an Interstate. He should have waited until l he had the backing he needed and campaigned to the public to elect more Representatives and Senators to back him. Did he think Madigan and the others would just throw up their arms and say “Gee I guess he’s right, we are and have been really stupid”. Not in this lifetime.
So he chose to risk the welfare of the State of Illinois, the lives of families and children and the infrastructure whose failure will kill people to make a point. The Captain of the Titanic could not just turn around when someone spotted the Iceberg. It can’t be done that way with the Illinois budget either. There really ought to be a law against an elected official refusing to do his job, maybe their is. But maybe he just needs to find someone who will just shake him and say, “stop this!”
