Central shoots for more regional success as it graduates to Class 3A

The Breese Central High School Cougars will go for their 12th regional-tournament championship this week when it competes in the Class 3A Civic Memorial Regional at Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto, IL, in southern Illinois near St. Louis, MO. In another Class 3A regional, the Cahokia High School Comanches and Breese Mater Dei Knights could be headed for a postseason rematch as they compete in the Mater Dei Regional.

Malcolm Hill now fifth all-time scorer for Fighting Illini

Former Belleville East High School Lancers boys basketball player and current University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball player Malcolm Hill is now the fifth all-time scorer in Illini basketball history, passing Cory Bradford during Illinois 73-57 Big Ten Conference basketball victory over the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in an NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball game played at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, NE.

March Madness is the best ticket in sports. And don’t dismiss the preps.

Southern Illinois and the St. Louis metro east is producing a full slate of high school postseason basketball coming up this week, including an unbelievable class 4A regional at Belleville East that will pit Belleville West Maroons, Belleville East Lancers, Althoff Catholic High School Crusaders, plus top-seeded East St. Louis, O'Fallon and the resurgent Collinsville Kahoks. IHSA tournaments also will be held at Civic Memorial in Bethalto, IL, Okawville, Nashville, and Breese Mater Dei.

Patience, perseverance make Kentucky's senior trio exceptional

With Dominique Hawkins, Mychal Mulder and Derek Willis as honorees, Kentucky's Senior Night on Tuesday will be something of an anomaly. Each player is a testament to the old-school values of diligence, patience and perseverance. And, of course, UK has become synonymous with college careers measured in months, one-and-done players and fast-tracking to professional fame and fortune.

Wesclin celebrates basketball regional title

The Wesclin IL High School Warriors from Trenton, IL, near St. Louis, MO traveled to Hillsboro IL to take on the Hilltoppers in the Illinois Class 2A boys basketball regional tournament championship game. Wesclin advanced to the Nashville IL sectional, where the Warriors will play Alton IL Marquette in the next round of the IHSA State Playoff series. The Warriors will face Marquette in the semifinals of the Nashville Sectional Wednesday.
