Metro-east offers slew of 5Ks and longer runs and walks in September

As the fall weather approaches, more runs and walks are offered throughout the metro-east to encourage healthy living and raise money for some good causes.

Here's a look at some upcoming 5Ks and longer races in the metro-east:

Splash n Dash 5K

8:15 a.m. Sept. 6

National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville


This race aims to give runners a break from the summer heat with a course featuring sprinklers, misting tents and possible super soaker ninjas hiding in the bushes.


NCCS 5K Charity Run/Walk presented by Scott Credit Union

8:30 a.m. Sept. 6

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville next to Founder's Hall


All proceeds of this fourth annual event benefit children with cancer and their families.


Bradley R. Smith Memorial 5K

8 a.m. Sept. 6

Troy Tri-Township Park, Pavilion 10


This fifth annual race is in memory of Senior Airman Bradley Randall Smith who was killed in 2010 in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. A scholarship has been set up in his name.


Harvest Challenge

8 a.m. Sept. 6

McKendree University, Alton Street, Lebanon

$15(advance)-$20 (race day) for 5K; $33-$40 half marathon; $5 Kids' K

This sixth annual road race gives participants the choice of a 5K run/walk or half marathon run. This year Kids' K, a 1,000-meter fun run, will be added for runners aged 12 and younger.


Sept. 11 Memorial Walkway 5K Run/Walk

9:11 a.m. Sept. 7

Hough Park, intersection of North Third and West C streets

$20; $25 on race day

All proceeds from this third annual event raise money for the September 11 Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois.


Sunshine Run 5K/10K and 2 Mile Charity Walk For Kids with Cancer

9 a.m. Sept. 13

National Great Rivers Museum, #2 Lock and Dam Way, East Alton,

$25; $10 for children age 5-12; free for children younger than 5

Our 4th Annual Sunshine Run/Charity Walk is currently a 5K/10K run and 2 mile walk held to raise awareness for children with cancer and to support families financially through this period of crisis.


2nd Annual Rally for Ron 5K Run/Walk

8 a.m. Sept. 13

Russell Commons Park - Alton

$25; $10 Kids Fun Run

This second annual race aims to raise money for one time financial assistance to families in our community with young children who have suddenly lost a parent. The race is in memory of Ron Perez, who died unexpectedly in 2013 at the age of 41.


Millstadt Parks Biathlon

8 a.m. Sept. 14

Liederkranz Park, 301 N. Jefferson, Millstadt

$40 per individual, $55 team

This 27th annual event includes a 5-mile run and 22-mile bike ride over the rolling hills of Millstadt.


Italian Fest

8 a.m. Sept. 20

Corner of Clay and Clinton streets, Collinsville

$25 for 5K; $8 for Kids Fun Run

This race encourages runners and walkers to lace up their sneakers and work off all the Italian food they'll eat at this year's Italian Fest.


Wag N Walk & 5K Run

8 a.m. Sept. 20

Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens, Glen Carbon


Leashed and vaccinated dogs are welcomed at this event, which benefits the Metro East Humane Society.


Champions 4 Children Candy Corn Dash

9 a.m. Sept. 20

Edwardsville Township Park, 6314 Center Grove Road

$20 through Sept. 10; $25 after Sept. 10

Edwardsville Township partnered with the Madison County Child Advocacy Center for this event. All proceeds will benefit victims of child abuse in Madison County.


Donut Dash 5K

9 a.m. Sept. 27

New Baden Park

$25 for 5K; $20 for 1 Mile Fun Run

Runners and walkers will shave one minute off their finishing times for each donut consumed during the race. Proceeds from the event benefit Zion United Church of Christ in New Baden.


Hills and Hollows Half Marathon and 5K

8 a.m. Sept. 27

Valmeyer Village Hall, 636 S. Meyer Avenue

$70 for half marathon; $25 for 5K

This 10th annual event raises funds for The BackStoppers Inc., Valmeyer Active Firemen's Association and Maeystown Fire Department.


Alton Miles for Meso 5K/2K Walk

8:30 a.m. Sept. 27

1 Court St., Alton

$30 through Sept. 19; $35 after Sept. 19

All proceeds from this sixth annual race benefit mesothelioma research. It is presented by the Simmons Firm and coordinated by the Metro Tri Club.


Kellsie's Hope Celebrate Heroes 5K

8 a.m. Sept. 28

Horseshoe Lake State Park, 3321 Highway 111, Granite City

$20; $25 on race day

This third annual race is in memory of Kellsie Marchbanks who died in 2011 from osteosarcoma. Proceeds from the event go toward fighting childhood cancer.
