Bearcats sweep baseball doubleheader
The McKendree University baseball team came out swinging as it claimed both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Monday at Lewis University. The Bearcats pulled way for a 6-1 victory in the opener before rolling to a 13-6 triumph in game two.
The sweep lifts McKendree to 5-15 overall and 4-8 in the GLVC. The Bearcats and Flyers split their four-game weekend series, as Lewis swept past McKendree in two games Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats will wrap up a 10-game road swing — their longest of the 2015 season —with another GLVC twinbill on Wednesday at the University of Illinois Springfield. First pitch is set for noon.
McKendree rapped out 30 hits on the day, reaching double figures in each contest against Lewis (8-12, 4-8 GLVC). The Bearcats registered 14 hits in the opener before pounding out 16 more in the second game. In addition, the 13 runs scored in the nightcap marks a season-high for the Bearcats.

Sophomore infielder Tyson Boehne (Carlyle) had four hits and drove in four runs against the Flyers.
Freshman right-hander Logan Zachry (Carlyle) earned his first collegiate victory in game two for the Bearcats. Making his first start of the season, Zachry allowed five earned runs and 10 hits over six innings of work. He walked just one batter and fanned two Flyers.
OVC honors SIUE freshman pitcher
EDWARDSVILLE Southern Illinois University Edwardsville freshman softball hurler Baylee Douglass has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Douglass earned the honor after throwing a one-hit shutout for the Cougars at Southeast Missouri and improved her season record to 10-2. The lone hit was a bunt single in the sixth inning. Douglass retired 15 Southeast Missouri batters in a row at one point.
SIUE continues play Wednesday with a nonconference matchup at SIU Carbondale. Game time is 4 p.m. The Cougars return home later this week with a Friday doubleheader against Jacksonville State and a Saturday doubleheader against Tennessee Tech.
McKendree matwoman wins at nationals
McKendree University freshman women's wrestler Alexis Porter has claimed the championship at 63kg at the recent ASICS University Nationals.
The Bearcats will be off until May 7-9 when individuals will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete at the U.S. Open and FILA Junior tournaments.
LU-Belleville drops softball twinbill
The Lindenwood University-Belleville Lady Lynx lost a doubleheader Monday to St. Gregory’s University.
The Lady Lynx lost 8-0 and 5-3.
The two losses left LU-Belleville with a 13-13 record on the season. The Lady Lynx return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian University in Edmund, Okla. The action begins at 1 p.m.
