The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars ran out to a 10-0 lead Friday and never looked back, defeating Eastern Illinois 10-2 in an elimination game at the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship in Edwardsville.
SIUE improved to 41-15. The Cougars will face Jacksonville State at 10 a.m. Saturday. A five-hour rain delay disrupted play at the tournament. The winner of the SIUE-Jacksonville State game will play Murray State in an elimination game. The winner of that game moves on to play Tennessee Tech.
Eastern Illinois was eliminated at 1-2 in the tournament and finishes the season 21-27.
The Cougars scored four times in the first inning to chase Eastern Illinois starter Jessica Wireman.
Alex McDavid paced the Cougars' offensive onslaught. She was 3 for 3. The senior connected on a pair of home runs and added a double to finish with four RBIs. Whitney Lanphier was 1 for 2 with a two-run single in the first inning.
Haley Chambers started and allowed just a single hit over three scoreless innings. She struck out two and improved to 24-7. Baylee Douglass tossed two innings. She allowed two runs on two hits and struck out three.
