Gateway Grizzlies’ starter Vince Molesky (3-6) was touched up for seven runs in 4.1 innings on the mound as the Florence Freedom beat the Grizzlies 8-1 in the rubber game of their three-game set at UC Health Stadium on Sunday, in Florence, Ohio.
Florence’s offense struck immediately against Molesky in the opening frame. The righty issued a walk to Daniel Fraga to start the game, which was followed by Zac Mitchell rocketing an RBI triple into the gap to score the game’s first run. Mitchell then scored on Austin Newell’s groundout.
After Ozzy Gonzalez singled home a run in the fourth inning, the Freedom would break the game open in the fifth. After they loaded the bases with one out, Newell stepped to the dish and laced a bases clearing triple into the right field corner. The hit gave Florence (36-42) a 6-0 advantage.
With the score 7-0 in the seventh, Grizzlies’ designated hitter Craig Massoni got the club on the board with a solo shot over the right field wall. His fourth homer of the year proved to be Gateway’s lone run of the contest.
Aside from the homer, Freedom Chuck Weaver was brilliant through seven frames. He allowed just three hits while picking up his sixth victory of the season. RHP Tony Vocca finished up the game with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Florence.
One bright spot for the Grizzlies (29-48) was their bullpen work. RHP Jordan Wellander tossed a scoreless inning while LHP Kyle Bouman allowed just one run in 1.2 innings on the hill. RHP Pete Perez also chipped in with a scoreless inning.
Seth Heck picked up two hits while Massoni collected two of his own.
The Grizzlies have an off day on Monday and then return to GCS Ballpark on Tuesday for the start of a three-game series against the Frontier Greys. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
