Jordan Spencer pitched seven innings of one-run ball Thursday night to lead the Gateway Grizzlies over the Frontier Greys 2-1 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget.
The Grizzlies (32-48) completed the sweep of the Greys with the victory. Gateway used strong starting pitching to victory in all three games with Spencer (2-1) leading the way in the series finale.
After the left-hander pitched a scoreless frame to begin the game, the Gateway offense tacked on two runs in the bottom of the first. Madison Beaird belted his fourth home run of the season to right field to lead off the inning .
The next batter Seth Heck doubled and advanced to third base when Craig Massoni flew out to center. Ben Waldrip then hit a foul ball down the third-base line that was caught by Zach Tanner but was deep enough to score Heck from third. Waldrip’s RBI put Gateway up 2-0.
Never miss a local story.
Spencer scattered eight hits and danced in and out of trouble all night. He induced three double play balls that turned out to be a big difference in the game.
The one time the Greys got to Spencer was in the third inning.
Shane Brown doubled with two outs and came around to score after the next batter Julio Rodriguez singled. However, Spencer got out of the inning with the score still 2-1 by retiring Scott Carcaise to end the threat.
Gateway had chances in the later innings to pad their lead, but weren’t able to. It wouldn’t matter because the Grizzlies’ bullpen limited the Greys to no runs on one hit in the final two innings to shut the door.
JaVaun West struck out Francisco Rosario with runners at the corners and two outs in the ninth to end the game. He picked up his first save of the season in the process. Spencer picked up the win and Colin Feldtman (4-2) took the loss after allowing two runs in his six innings of work.
Beaird paced Gateway offensively with two hits.
The Grizzlies now hit the road for a three-game series over the weekend against the Washington Wild Things. First pitch from CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, Ohio, is set for 7:05 p.m.
