Bob Goalby, the 1968 Masters golf champion, was honored Friday at Belleville West with the rededication of the football and soccer field in his name. The 1947 graduate of Belleville Township lent his celebrity to the the effort to raise the $1.4 million needed for the installation of artificial turf at the two District 201 stadiums.
Mark Smith was Mr. Basketball last year, the best high school basketball player in Illinois. Now the Edwardsville High School grad is a freshman playing for the University of Illinois. New head coach Brad Underwood sang his praises to the press on Wednesday.
The football field at Belleville East was named Friday in honor of Charlie Woodford, 95. Woodford was the founding president of the Lancers booster club and a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart during his service in World War II. (Note: Audio is quiet, so turn your volume up all the way.)
