St. Louis Cardinals

Scott Wuerz blog: A little cheer

Something I've noticed about the 2008 Cardinals that I really appreciate is the way the members of this team root for each other all the time.

One thing that impresses me the most is that the Cardinals two biggest stars -- Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina -- are always leaning over the top railing when the Redbirds are at bat, cheering on the batter at the plate.

When Rick Ankiel threw out his second Rockies runner of the game Tuesday night at third base, you could see a great shot of the Cardinals dugout in the background. All the players were jumping up and down and high fiving in reaction to the play just like you would expect from a little league team.

That sort of enthusiasm is impressive. Especially with the dark cloud that seemed to hang over the team last season to suck the life out of the Cardinals at every turn.

Baseball at the major league level is a business. But I have yet to see a team put it all together and play championship quality baseball if they weren't having fun playing the game.
