1980 Crusaders to be honored by St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame

The St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame will honor 13 former professional athletes and sports figures ats annual inductions Feb. 2 at Gateway Classic Cars, St. Louis showroom in O’Fallon, Illinois. Inductees include Dave Butz, of the NFL Washington Redskins, former Major League Baseball player Gary Gaetti, NFL kicker Craig Hentrich, Southern Illinois University Carbondale head men’s basketball coach Rich Herrin, Stanford University volleyball standout Marnie Triefenbach, University of Illinois and NFL linebacker Dana Howard, Harlem Globetrotters owner Mannie Jackson, MLB pitcher Kirk Rueter of the San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos, PGA star Tom Wargo, Olympic powerlifter Tom Stock, and others.

Here are the new weekly Belleville News-Democrat boys high school basketball rankings for metro-east schools. The Edwardsville High School Tigers from Madison County, Illinois, are first in the BND Large-School Rankings, followed by the Althoff Catholic High School Crusaders, East St. Louis Senior High Flyers and Belleville West Maroons from Belleville, IL near St. Louis, MO. The Okawville Rockets from Washington County, Illinois lead the BND Small-School Rankings, followed by the Gibault Catholic High School Hawks from Waterloo, Illinois and the Nashville, Illinois Hornets from Washington County in Southern Illinois.

Edwardsville’s Epenesa honored at Polynesian Bowl

Edwardsville High School Tigers high school football player, senior All-American and University of Iowa Hawkeyes college football recruit A.J. Epenesa was named MVP at the inaugural Polynesian Bowl for high school football players at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, HI. Epenesa is from Glen Carbon, IL in southern Illinois near St. Louis, MO.

Belleville Althoff Catholic High School Crusaders senior guard and Saint Louis University Billikens men’s basketball recruit Jordan Goodwin is nine points away from breaking the school’s all-time scoring record that currently belongs to Kevin Lisch after a 100-point performance in the Chick-fil-A Classic at Belleville East High School in Belleville, IL in southern Illinois near St. Louis, MO.

Goodwin scores 42, but Althoff falls to Chaminade

The Althoff Catholic High School Crusaders of Belleville, Illinois, took on Missouri power Chaminade in the championship game of the annual Chick-fil-A Classic boys basketball tournament Saturday at Belleville East High School. The defending IHSA Class 3A state champion Crusaders were led by senior Jordan Goodwin, who will continue playing next season for the Saint Louis University Billikens. Chaminade was led by junior and top college prospect Jericole Hellems.

Pickett leads Lancers charge, tops West for third place

The Belleville East Lancers finished in third place of the Chick-fil-A Classic at Belleville East High School in southern Illinois. Javon Pickett, who has committed to play next season for John Groce at the University of Illinois in Champaign, scored 30 points in a late charge. Belleville East and the Belleville West Maroons will play in Southwestern Conference play Tuesday in the St. Louis metro-east.
