Althoff graduate Epiphany Smith has signed to attend the University of Montevallo in Alabama to run track.
Smith is the reigning Class 1A 100-meter sectional champion and will join the Division II school that will compete in the Gulf South Conference starting with this academic year. The team is coached by Tommy Barksdale.
“Montevallo has an excellent track and field program and a number of very good sprinters. It’s a place where there will be competition each day which in turn will make me stronger and faster,” Smith said this week. “When I started looking at schools. I wanted someplace where I could compete and get a great education. But I wanted a place which was small, and like Althoff, was a close group. I wanted it to have that feeling of a family — like Althoff.”
Smith also considered several other schools including Indiana Tech and Quincy University. She plans on majoring in exercise science.
Never miss a local story.
Smith attended Governor French Academy in Belleville during her first two years of high school before transferring to Althoff prior to her junior season where she was a two-time Class 1A state qualifier.
Smith qualified in the 100 meters as both a junior and senior, and this season also earned a state finals berth in the 200 meters. She also was a member of two Althoff relay teams that advanced to compete at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.
Smith’s top performance came this past May when she placed 10th in the 200 meters. Smith also placed 15th and 17th in the 100 meters the past two years.
