Here’s what happened in various high school sporting events around the metro-east Wednesday:
▪ Mehlville 5, Belleville East 2
The Mehlville Panthers (2-2) handed the Belleville East Lancers (5-2) their second loss of the season Wednesday night.
Ahmedin Becirovic was the leading scorer for the Panthers with two goals on the night. Phillipo Barkat, Cody Ruhl, and Alem Sabic each scored once on East’s Nick Hayes. Mehlville goalkeeper Jacob Klevorn made two saves but was unable to get the shutout with Devin Chambers and Tyler Lane each scoring for the Lancers. Hayes made seven saves.
East travels to Columbia (5-0-1) for a nonconference game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
▪ Carlyle 1, Salem 0
The Carlyle Indians (2-5) shut out the Salem Wildcats (2-3) in a Cahokia Conference game.
Carlyle senior Jacopo Alongi scored the lone unassisted goal. Junior goalkeeper Iker De La Cruz played the full 80 minutes and saved all seven shots for the Indians. It was his first solo shutout of the season.
Carlyle will travel to St. Anthony in Effingham (1-2) for a game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Salem heads to Lebanon (0-2) on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. Cahokia Conference matchup against the Greyhounds.
▪ East St. Louis 2, Pinckneyville 0
East St. Louis picked up its second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Pinckneyville. The Flyers took both sets 21-19.
The Flyers (2-1) will play a nonconference match against Gibault (2-3) in New Athens at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Pinckneyville (3-1) travels to Du Quoin (2-3) to play a rivalry match Sept. 14 against the Indians.
▪ Steeleville 2, Lebanon 0
The Steeleville Warriors (2-1) edged the Lebanon Greyhounds (0-4) on Wednesday 22-20, 21-18.
The Warriors will try to extend their winning streak against New Athens at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Greyhounds take on Valmeyer at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
▪ Okawville 2, Lebanon 1
The Okawville Rockets (3-1) edged the Lebanon Greyhounds (0-4) 21-15, 17-21, 15-13.
The Greyhounds look for their first win of the season against Valmeyer at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
▪ Wesclin 2, Marissa 0
The Wesclin Warriors (5-0) remained undefeated Wednesday, defeating the Marissa Meteors (1-4) in a nonconference match 21-14, 21-13.
Wesclin is in first place in the Cahokia Conference, with Columbia (4-1) in second.
The Warriors play New Athens (2-2) in Marissa at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Marissa faces Pinckneyville (3-1) in New Athens at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
