After three years of winning nearly every tournament in which they competed, the O’Fallon Panthers finally claimed that exclusive sectional championship on Monday at Panther Creek Golf Course in Springfield.
Senior Brooke Boatman shot a solid round of 76 while three teammates added scores of 83 or better as O’Fallon posted a 13 stroke win at the Class 2A Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Girls Golf Sectional.
Winners of the Southwestern Conference and IHSA regional the past two weeks, the Panthers were at their very best on one of the most difficult courses they have played on all season. With Boatman tying for third in the individual competition, seniors Emily Marrs and Alyssa McMinn added rounds of 81, while sophomore Briana McMinn added an 83 for O’Fallon, which finished with a team score of 321.
Normal University (334) and host Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (336) rounded out the top three teams that will advance to the Class 2A State Golf Tournament, which begins Friday at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur. The trip to the state finals is the third straight for O’Fallon, which has placed 12th and 10th in state the past two years.
Never miss a local story.
But for at least a few hours Monday, coach Chris Eddy and Panthers were enjoying their first sectional title.
“I’m very proud of the girls and the way they played today. Panther Creek is a championship golf course anytime but today with it being so wet, it made a long course that much longer and more difficult,” Eddy said. “Brooke (Boatman) had an excellent round and for us to had four scored 83 or better and shoot 321, I couldn’t be more pleased.
“The key today was that we didn’t made any big numbers. We had some bogeys and while you don’t want to make many of them, they are certainly better than making doubles or triple (bogeys) on holes. We didn’t have one triple bogey all day today.”
Edwardsville senior Addasyn Zeller was the only local individual to advance. Zeller shot a 79 on Monday.
Class 1A Marquette Sectional
Nashville seniors Rachel Kell and Brooke Bartling came in with solid rounds of 82 to lead Nashville to a second place finish at the Class A Alton Marquette Girls Sectional on Monday at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course.
Second in the Class A state finals a year ago, the Hornettes finished with score of 352, 16 strokes higher than sectional champion Massac County (336). Effingham St. Anthony (358) rounded out the top three teams which will advance to the Class A State Tournament which begins on Friday at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.
Seniors Jordan Stiegman (89) and Hope Rueter (99) rounded out the four scores for Nashville. Advancing as individuals were Ellie Kane, of Marquette, (86) and Bailey Sharpmack, of Roxana (87).

Also qualifying were Wesclin junior Parker Durgin, who shot a 78, and Gibault senior Zachary Heet, who tied for the final qualifying spot with an 81.
Mount Carmel (310), Hillsboro (320) and Effingham St. Anthony (326) were the three teams that advanced.
