The Althoff doubles team of Olivia Melichar and Mary Nester won two of three matches Friday and is in contention for a top-five finish at the Class 1A Girls State Tennis Tournament in suburban Chicago.
After winning their first two matches Thursday, Nester and Melichar dropped a round of 16 match to Allison Kowalke and Claire Wortman, of Effingham St. Anthony, 6-2, 6-4. But showing the form that helped them win the Triad sectional title, the Crusaders duo won two consolation matches later Friday afternoon.
After disposing of Sara Kreutztrager and Haley Milazzo, of Roxana, 6-2, 6-4, Nester and Melichar defeated Florence Almeda and Madeleine Ward-Schultz, of Chicago University High School, 6-4, 7-5 to advance into the consolation bracket semifinals.
The Crusaders top pair will take on Lauren Hird and Noely Baumann, of Rock Island Alleman, at 8:30 a.m. at Rolling Meadows High School. Nester and Melichar are assured of a top-10 finish and could place as high as fifth with two wins Saturday.

Four other metro-east entries ended their seasons with consolation round losses Friday.
In Class 1A, the Highland doubles team of Kirsten Plocher and Kate Feldmann split a pair of matches Friday to finish the state finals with a record of 3-2.
In Class 2A, Belleville East senior Isabel Burwitz finished 2-2 at the state finals in singles, while the doubles tandems of Grace Desse and Abby Cimarolli, of Edwardsville, and Miley Brunner and Kate Macaluso, of O’Fallon, also lost consolation matches.
