Dates set for annual metro-east baseball clinic

The 14th annual Interstate 70 Baseball Coaches Clinic, one of the top high school baseball coaching clinics in Southern Illinois near St. Louis, MO, will be held Jan. 15-17 at Greenville High School in Greenville, Illinois. Among the guest speakers are former Louisiana State University (LSU) coach Skip Bertman and Texas Rangers hitting coach Anthony Iapoce.

These new IHSA rules are designed to make baseball safer

New Illinois High School Association high school baseball pitching guidelines will limit pitchers to 105 pitches a game as part of sweeping new safety-related changes developed by the IHSA’s Baseball Advisory Committee and Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and go into effect for the 2017 season high school baseball season for southern Illinois high schools and schools throughout Illinois.

Collinsville goes to the Extreme in hiring its new coach

Brett Swip, a Collinsville High School graduate, co-founder of Collinsville Extreme Baseball and Softball Club, and long-time NCAA Division III and II assistant coach, was named the eighth head coach in the history of the Collinsville Kahoks softball program. He was most recently head coach at Webster University in St. Louis, and has served as an assistant at Washington University and Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

Local baseball community loses a colorful character

Syl “Tuffy” Mueth, one of the most colorful characters for decades on the metro-east local baseball scene, died Wednesday at age 88. Mueth managed the Millstadt VFW club in the Mon-Clair Baseball League for more than 50 years and is a member of the Mon-Clair Hall of Fame. He also received the league’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Middle school girls turn triple play — times two

The Wesclin Middle School girls softball team of Trenton, Illinois turned not one, but two triple plays in an Illinois Junior High School Association game against Carlyle. In the quarter of a million games played over the 149 years since baseball became a professional sport, only 706 triple plays have been recorded, including the 11 turned this season in Major League Baseball.

State taking steps to protect high school pitchers in metro-east

The group that regulates high school sports in Illinois is proposing limits on how many pitches a high school baseball player can throw in a game and how much rest he must receive between appearances. The Illinois High School Association said Wednesday that an advisory committee has proposed capping pitchers at 115 pitches per day and requiring four days rest before they could pitch again.

Bears end season with Great Lakes Regional loss to Indiana state champs

For the second year in a row, the Metro-East Bears showed other Midwestern state championship teams that they were more than just a host team at the American Legion Baseball Great Lakes Regional. The Bears nearly pushed Indiana state champ Rockport into a second game Sunday, but Rockport Post 254 came up with two runs in the top of the 11th inning for a 4-3 victory that sent the team to the Legion World Series.

Metro-East Bears’ offense relentless in Legion baseball playoff win over Belleville

After losing twice to the Belleville Hilgards during the regular-season, the Metro-East Bears quickly found a new gear in the American Legion District 22 baseball playoffs at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Simmons Baseball Complex. The Bears collected five straight hits to start the game Tuesday and grabbed an early 4-0 lead on the way to a 9-2 victory over the Hilgards in the double-elimination tournament.

Belleville Hilgards open Legion playoffs against rival Metro-East Bears

While the American Legion Baseball District 22 season was a bit unusual because of the shortage of teams this summer, there was no shortage of drama. With the Belleville Hilgards, Metro-East Bears and Highland all tied with 2-2 records in district play, a three-way tie to determine the No.1 playoff seed went to the tiebreaker of runs allowed. Highland ended up with the No. 1 seed, followed by the No. 2 Bears and No. 3 Belleville.

The BND Large School Softball Player of the Year is...

O'Fallon senior Addie Barnouski batted a career high .514 and was 17-3 in the pitcher's circle. But the BND Large School Player of the Year said the highlight of her season was capturing the Panthers' first regional championship since 2012. Barnouski will attend Southeast Missouri State University starting this fall.
