Playing without senior standout Zach Becherer because of mononucleosis, the Lebanon Greyhounds lost 5-2 to North Greene on Thursday in the semifinals of Class 1A Carlinville Sectional at Blackburn College.
North Greene will take on New Athens for the sectional championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Blackburn.
Lebanon coach Dave Causey said Becherer, who signed with Rend Lake, had been feeling ill and got the diagnosis Wednesday.
Already missing another starter, the Greyhounds (12-16) played the game with 10 players and turned to No. 4 starter Dustin Brown hoping to reach the sectional title game.
"Dustin actually threw really well and kind of kept them off balance," Causey said. "I think they came in expecting to see Becherer. I'm proud of them, they fought hard tonight and Dustin threw the game of his life."
Lebanon led 1-0 lead early, but North Greene fought back with four hits in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Greyhounds trailed 3-2 going into the sixth, but North Greene tacked on some insurance runs.
Taylor Schmitt had a two-out RBI double in the first for Lebanon. Zach Grob tripled and scored on a Schmitt ground ball in the sixth.
Lebanon's Paul Pilackas had two hits and Joe Adams reached base safely three times.
