Belleville East’s Pickett asks out of commitment to Illini basketball

Belleville East High School senior Javon Pickett, who was among St. Louis, Mo. area leaders with 25.9 points per game, has asked the University of Illinois for his release from a National Letter of Intent he signed in November. The firing of former Fighting Illini head coach John Groce played a role in the decision, as it did with East St. Louis, IL 5-star recruit Jeremiah Tilmon decommitted earlier in the week.

East St. Louis names new high school basketball coaches

Stetson Hairston, a former standout player at Belleville IL East High School and an assistant at Southwestern Illinois College SWIC in Belleville IL near St. Louis, MO for the past two seasons, has been named the new head boys basketball coach at East St. Louis High School in Southern Illinois. Dr. Dwan Prude was named the new Flyerettes girls basketball head coach.

Recruiting battle for Edwardsville’s Mark Smith heats up

Edwardsville IL High School Tigers senior guard Mark Smith is the subject of an intense NCAA college basketball recruiting battle. On Thursday, Smith was visited by the University of Missouri Tigers, the Michigan State Spartans, the Kentucky Wildcats and the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. Smith will also visit Michigan State and coach Tom Izzo this weekend.

Gilbert out as East St. Louis boys basketball coach

The East St. Louis Senior High School Flyers from East St. Louis IL have relieved head basketball coach Phillip Gilbert of his coaching duties after the conclusion of the IHSA boys basketball season that ended during the Illinois High School Association postseason with a loss to the Belleville West High School Maroons in the Class 4A Belleville East regional played in Belleville, IL in southern Illinois near St. Louis, MO.

Every local small-school coach thought he was the best player on the court this year

Okawville IL High School Rockets senior guard and University of Evansville college basketball recruit Noah Frederking was a unanimous choice by Southern Illinois coaches as the 2016-17 Belleville News-Democrat Small-School (Class 1A-2A) Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Okawville is located in southern Illinois near St. Louis, MO. The Rockets finished second at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Class 1A state tournament. Okawville coach Jon Kraus was voted BND Small-School Basketball Coach of the Year.

Edwardsville’s Mark Smith named Illinois’ Mr. Basketball

Edwardsville IL High School senior guard Mark Smith has been recognized as Illinois Mr. Basketball, becoming the first winner from the metro-east since East St. Louis IL Senior High School’s Darius Miles in 2000. Smith led the Tigers to a 30-2 record and a berth in the Illinois High School Association Class 4A super-sectional.
