Highland dashed whatever hope Mascoutah had remaining for a potential 5A state playoff bid.
Quarterback Garrett Marti ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more in the Bulldogs’ 55-22 defeat of the Indians Friday.
Mascoutah (3-5) needed to win each of its final two games to finish 5-4 and keep itself on the playoff bubble. Highland, meanwhile, remains undefeated as the No. 2-ranked 5A team in Illinois.
The Bulldogs took a 34-3 lead into halftime and never looked back. Marti scored on runs of 9, 51 and 59 yards and connected with Sam LaPorta and Jack Etter with scoring passes. Highland running back Brady Feldman also scored three times on runs of 3, 48 and 4 yards.
Mascoutah scored on a pair of touchdown runs by quarterback Devon Ross and on a seven-yard pass from Ross to Patrick Beck. Cole Junker also booted a 25-yard field goal.
The Indians will close out their season next week at Centralia. Highland travels to Charleston for the regular-season finale.
