Nashville spoiled Carlyle coach Chris Birkner’s debut with a 22-6 win Friday night.
The Hornets held Carlyle to just 73 total rushing yards – a mere six yards on the ground in the second half – as the Indians struggled to find any kind of rhythm offensively.
“It’s a learning process for everybody,” Birkner said. “I’m still learning how to call offense on the varsity level for sure. We have a new starting quarterback and we have a lot of juniors and sophomores on the line. Penalties and turnovers got us down early and we have to clean that up.
“Give Nashville credit, they are big and strong and aggressive and they did a good job.”
Never miss a local story.
Carlyle didn’t have a first down in the third quarter as senior quarterback Ryan Rakers was harassed repeatedly by the Hornet defense. Missouri recruit Royce Newman led the charge from his defensive end position, spending most of the night in the Indians’ backfield.
“Royce had a great night getting to (Rakers),” Nashville coach Tim Kuhn said of the 6-foot-6, 280-pound senior. “We played with a great motor tonight, 11 guys just flying to the ball you can’t ask for much more than that.”
Offensively, Nashville chewed up nearly 300 yards of turf, rushing for 289 yards on more than 50 carries. Hunter Schultze led the ground attack with 147 yards on just nine attempts, as Jaris Dalman added 70 yards on 15 tries.
“He is a warrior,” Kuhn said of Schultze. “He runs the ball with attitude and we love that. I think the other guys feed off of that. And Jaris is a downhill machine. If we can do anything up front we are going to do a lot of good things.”
“This is a group of guys that haven’t had a lot of Friday night lights,” Kuhn said. “It’s the offensive line guys that are the unknowns and they did a really good job for their first Friday night.”
