Pitcher Michael Wacha was activated from the 60-day disabled list Thursday by the St. Louis Cardinals, prior to his 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee against the slumping Brewers.
Also, the Cardinals purchased the contract of first baseman Xavier Scruggs from Class AAA Memphis and moved outfielder Shane Robinson from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Wacha has been sidelined by a stress reaction in his right shoulder and has not pitched since June 17. He made one rehab start, throwing two scoreless innings Sunday for Class AA Springfield.
He will be facing a Brewers team that has dropped eight consecutive games to fall three games behind the first-place Cardinals in the NL Central. It's the opener of a four-game series that continues through Sunday.
St. Louis is coming off a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates and has matched a season-high with five consecutive wins.
Scruggs, 26, batted .286 with a robust 21 home runs and 87 RBIs in 135 games at Memphis. He also scored 82 runs and batted .328 with runners in scoring position. Scruggs has hit 20 or more homers in each of his last five seasons. He will wear No. 59.
Scruggs feasted on left-handed pitching at Memphis, logging a .350 average with 14 doubles and 11 home runs in 140 at-bats.
Robinson, 29, was placed on the disabled list Aug. 26 with a shoulder injury following a stolen-base attempt at Pittsburgh.
