The St. Louis Cardinals added outfield depth Friday when they acquired right-handed-hitting Gary Brown on a waiver claim from the San Francisco Giants.
Brown, 26, was designated for assignment by the Giants when Justin Maxwell made the team Friday. He will report to the Cardinals Class AAA affiliate in Memphis, Tenn. Brown was a first-round round draft pick (24th player overall) of San Francisco in 2010 out of Cal State Fullerton University.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Brown has a career .277 average with 44 home runs, 227 RBIs and 141 stolen bases in 550 minor-league games.
Brown batted .271 with 10 homers, 53 RBIs and 36 stolen bases for Class AAA Fresno last season. He appeared in seven games with San Francisco, batting .429 (3-for-7). Brown played in one of the Giants’ Division Series games against the Washington Nationals in October.

The Diamond Bar, Calif. native appeared in 22 games for the Giants during spring training, batting .154 (6-for-39) with one home run and three RBIs.
The Cardinals are in Memphis for their final spring contest Friday night. They open the regular season at 7:05 p.m. Sunday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
