St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina had his injured left thumb examined Monday afternoon and the club hopes the All-Star will be on its postseason roster.
A St. Louis-based hand specialist determined that the injury to the ligament still is present, but Molina will have a splint built to try to allow him to hit and catch. Molina will test his playing abilities with the splint over the next few days.
“We are still optimistic that Yadier will be on our postseason roster,” Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak said Monday.
Molina injured the thumb Sept. 20 when he tagged out the Chicago Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo at the plate on a strong throw from right fielder Jason Heyward.

The Cardinals will play Pittsburgh or the Chicago Cubs in the first game of the National League Division Series at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Busch Stadium.
