According to an Associated Press story, talks between the Cardinals and manager Tony La Russa are going well and there seems to be some momentum gaining toward his return for a 16th season on the bench.
It is still widely speculated that the makeup of the coaching staff could be a major hang-up in the dealings. Some seem to believe that ownership has asked the skipper to make some changes.
One of the most likely alterations would seem to be in the hitting coach department. Mark McGwire seemed to imply at the end of the 2010 season that he might be ready to re-retire with new triplets and two other young children back home in California.
The Cardinals have had Mike Aldrete onboard as assistant hitting coach, but I'm not sure if he would be a candidate if McGwire leaves.
