According to MLB.com, the Cardinals have re-signed back-up catcher Jason LaRue to a one-year contract.
Terms were not disclosed.
It's a bit of a surprising move since St. Louis GM John Mozeliak said earlier in the month that the team was content to look around at its options instead of quickly re-upping LaRue for a third season. That sounded a whole lot like the Cardinals were no longer impressed with what the veteran backstop brings to the table...
LaRue hit .240 in 51 games last season. He doesn't hit like he did when he was a starter with the Reds several years ago. But the 35-year-old catcher catches a pretty good game and seems to have the confidence of the St. Louis coaches and pitching staff.
