The Cardinals are one of four or five teams thought to be in competition for former Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Mets and Dodgers are also thought to be in serious consideration.
According to the Yahoo report, Wang is one of the best groundball pitchers in the majors, so he is likely to be swayed by the opportunity to play in front of a strong fielding team like the Redbirds. But he might also be swayed by remaining in New York with the Mets.
Wang is recovering from shoulder trouble and is expected to miss the first couple of months of the season. That might scare the Cardinals away, based on their history with Mark Mulder, Matt Clement and other injury-prone pitchers. But Wang is only 29 and seems a good bet to bounce back. And he would be a perfect fit for the St. Louis pitching and defense philosophy.
