Joel Pineiro pitched like a $7.5 million pitcher Saturday as he completely shut down the Astros over four innings.
Pineiro struck out three and walked none while allowing only one hit to Houston, leading the Cardinals to a 5-1 victory. Meanwhile, Brad Thompson rebounded from a shaky spring training start to got three innings, allowing no runs on two hits.
At the plate, eight different Redbirds had one hit each. Colby Rasmus made the most of his one hit with a triple. Jason LaRue added a double. Khalil Greene drove in a pair of runs with a single.
The Astros lone run scored was knocked in by former Cardinals farmhand John Gall.
