I have really dug the FanFest. But I have to admit that I was a little bit underwhelmed by the home run derby.
As much as I tried to get caught up in the whole deal, I can't help but feel like it was glorified batting practice. And it took FOREVER. It also didn't help that Albert Pujols was basically eliminated early. Sure, he made it to the second round. But since the totals from first and second rounds are cumulative, and he barely made it to the second frame, he was so far behind that he barely had a chance to stay alive. When he didn't hit 12 or 15 bombs leading off the second round, it was all over.
The derby didn't seem to have the cache that it did in past years when Mark McGwire was hitting bombs. No one really got on a run. Only Price Fielder's first round really wowwed the crowd when he launched a few tape measure blasts.
Hopefully the All-Star Game, itself, will be a lot better. it's about time that the National League play a good game
Never miss a local story.
