Former Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty is still hopeful of bringing Scott Rolen to the Queen City, according to Fox Sports.
The Reds are lying in the weeds and hoping the Blue Jays can't deal Roy Halladay so that they are more desperate to unload Rolen's contract, which runs through the end of next season. (It seems like just yesterday Jocketty swapped Placido Polanco and Mike Timlin for Rolen and he was getting the Matt Holliday treatment in front of an appreciate crowd at old Busch Stadium.)
It seemed last season that the Cardinals fleeced the Jays when they pawned off Rolen for Troy Glaus. But my how things have changed. This season Glaus has been an $11.25 million paperweight and a resurgent Rolen is hitting .318 for Toronto in 86 games.
While Rolen would make a good leader for a young Reds squad, the Jays would have to pick up a huge chunk of his paycheck to make him go away.
A Rolen swap may also quiet rumors that Cardinals skipper and pitching coach Dave Duncan would join Jocketty in Cincy next year. Rolen demanded to be shipped out of St. Louis to a team on the short end of the toughest division in baseball because his hatred for La Russa had become so intense. If Jocketty wants La Russa back, he sure has a funny way of showing it.
