Cardinals starter got blasted for seven runs in five innings Saturday as the Cardinals lost their fourth game in a row.
It wasn't a surprise the Redbirds lost. After all, their major league squad stayed in Ft. Meyers across the state where it will play its second game in three days Sunday. Albert Pujols, Rick Ankiel, Ryan Ludwick, Khalil Green and Yadier Molina were all absent from the lineup.
Never miss a local story.
Still, it was a disappointment the Cardinals couldn't do more to defend an early 5-1 lead.
Todd Wellemeyer was victimized by a steady gale to left field that had Orioles players licking their chops in batting practice. Several O's were pulling lazy pop ups into the breeze and cackling like school girls when they got caught in the jet stream and floated out of the ballpark.
The Cardinals fielded a lineup of prospects anchored by Colby Rasmus, David Freese and Joe Mather.
Freese was 3-for-4 in his best game of the spring so far while Rasmus was 2-for-3 with a triple into the right field corner. Mather was 2-for-5 with two RBI to raise his spring batting average to .203.
Several fans in the stands complained about the lack of Cardinals star power on the field. On one hand, it is a spring training game. But on the other, when you fly to Florida to watch the Cardinals play, it's kind of a bummer to only get to see a team of scrubs take the field.
