Cardinals farmhand Sam Freeman will has been shut down and will undergo Tommy John surgery.
According to mlb.com, Freeman, a lefty relief pitcher, felt pain in his pitching elbow last season and the team hoped he would recover with rest over the off-season.
Freeman was 2-2 with a 2.41 ERA last season in 41 games split between Advanced Class A Palm Beach and Class AA Springfield.
Meanwhile... The Angels have named former Cardinals hurler Joel Pineiro the starter of their first Cactus League game of the spring.
Pineiro will toe the rubber Thursday against the White Sox, according to the Orange County Register. He is expected to throw about 30 pitches before jogging in the outfield and hitting the showers.
