The Cardinals finally pulled the trigger on disabling hobbled outfielder Ryan Ludwick. Today they called up Jon jay to replace him on the roster.
Jay, 25, hit .302 in 26 games with the big club earlier this season. He had a homer and three doubles in 45 plate appearances in his first stay. Since then, he's been tearing things up in Class AAA Memphis with a .321 batting average including four homers and 16 doubles.
Apparently itching for another shot in the Bigs, Jay's was riding an eight-game hitting streak in the minors and has stolen 13 bases in 13 tries. Jay was sent out when the Cardinals picked up former Yankee Randy Winn.
Ludwick, who thought he was close to returning to the lineup, aggravated his calf injury late this week while he was running on a treadmill. The Cardinals haven't said how long they expect Ludwick to be out.
