The Cardinals have announced that lefty rookie Jaime Garcia has been named the team's fifth starter.
Garcia has been the best of the three candidates -- including Kyle McClellan and Rich Hill -- for the job. But it's still a surprise because pitching coach Dave Duncan said at the beginning of spring training he didn't think Garcia's arm was physically ready as the young pitcher recovers from elbow ligament replacement surgery.
I think it's a great decision, not only because Garcia pitched so well during the spring, but also because Kyle McClellen is sorely needed in the bullpen.
But what happens to Hill now? The former Cubs southpaw has made improvements mechanically throughout the spring. Does the club send him to Class AAA to keep working on things or maybe it will keep three lefties in the bullpen to give Hill a chance to continue to work with Duncan.
