According to the Boston media, the Cardinals are interested in Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo who has been designated for assignment.
Lugo was let go in the middle of a four-year, $36 million contract signed prior to the 2007 season. The BoSox grew weary of him because his glove has been shaky and he never panned out as the leadoff man they hoped he would be.
In St. Louis, the Cardinals presumably hope that Lugo would revert back to his smooth fielding ways he showed when he was with Tampa Bay. His leadoff skills would be less important in St. Louis where he could bat eighth -- or ninth.
