Former Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty has been named Major League Baseball's Executive of the Year the the Sporting News.
Jocketty took a low budget Cincinnati club to the playoffs by crafting a team that was strong on pitching and consistent with its offense. His key moves were trading for former St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen, journeyman shortstop Orlando Cabrera and surprising the baseball world by outbidding large market clubs for electrifying hurler Aroldis Chapman.
A lot of people scoffed when Rolen was acquired in trade -- and then signed to a contract extension. But the oft-injured third sacker had a huge rebound year and provided a much needed complimentary bat to first baseman Joey Votto. Maybe even more importantly, Rolen became the clubhouse leader of a young team and gave the Reds the grit they needed to hold off St. Louis.
I will be interested to see what the Reds do this off-season to try to hold off the Cardinals. And even more interested to see wha the Redbirds do to try to get back on top.
