The Cardinals report that David Friese has a broken bone on his hand after he was hit by a pitch in his club's Sunday game against Atlanta.
Struck on the back of his hand, Friese may need surgery to make it heal right. A rough early estimate is that he could be out six plus weeks.
If there is a bright side, Allen Craig, who has been disabled with a groin muscle pull, is health and ready to come back to the team. Craig has some experience at third base even though he is primarily an outfielder these days.
Third base isn't the only problem the Cardinals have right now.
Never miss a local story.
Nick Punto also left the game Sunday with what was described as a "tight" hamstring. Skip Schumaker reportedly is nowhere close from the elbow injury that put him on the shelf.
