A month ago the Cardinals were struggling though every ninth inning and cellar dwellers with pitching to deal were licking their chops with thoughts of landing Shelby Miller in exchange for a summer rental.
But it's time to wake up from those dreams thanks to the current hot streak of St. Louis rookie closer Fernando Salas -- not to mention the addition of righty Lance Lynn to the middle relied mix.
The Redbirds can turn up their noses at pricey offers and shop for bargains thanks to the internal solutions to they have discovered to their biggest problems. Salas, who didn't seem capable of a 1-2-3 inning a month ago, allowed his first base hit in July today in a save against the Diamondbacks. And during his last six games he's only allowed one walk.
So the Padres can peddle Heath Bell elsewhere and the Mets can just keep K-Rod. The Birds might be better suited to look for cheaper middle relief help.
