ESPN reports that the Cardinals may be close to a deal for Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal.
A .283 career hitter, Furcal has had a terrible 2011 season with a .195 batting average in only 133 at bats thanks to a broken hand. But he's been hot lately with a .389 average over the last week.
Furcal, 33, is a much better fielder than current St. Louis shortstop Ryan Theriot who has lost playing time to youngster Daniel Descalso because of his inconsistent play. It hasn't helped his cause that Theriot's bat disappeared in July -- until he collected a pair of doubles Friday night. But one of those plays could have easily been called an error.
