According to a CBS report, the Cardinals have agreed to a five-year contract extension with catcher Yadier Molina.
The deal is expected to pay Molina $75 milllon which will make him the third-highest-paid backstop in baseball history. Joe Mauer's $184-million deal is the standard for catchers.
Molina is the best defensive receiver in the game and I am glad to see him stay in the fold. But I am more than a little shocked by the size of the deal. I figured the Cardinals would have to pay Yadi at least $10 million a year to keep him beyond the 2012 season and that they would have to pay him for a minimum of four years. But the final total nukes those amounts.
